Testing and calculating of building structures
The Institute as an accredited testing laboratory performs testing of construction structures either in-situ, or when just structural elements are of concern, then in a laboratory environment. Static and dynamic load tests of bridges, before they are put into service, are the most frequent tests carried out in-situ. Testing of other structures, as well as static and dynamic calculations, are carried out either in order to verify their load capacity (e.g. load capacity of piles, complemented by integrity testing of piles not exposed to a load test), or within a comprehensive diagnosis due to a structural failure. For a detailed diagnosis an experimental stress analysis by bonded strain gauges is applied, frequently complemented by displacement and temperature measurements. As for characteristics of soil the granularity and degree of compaction are routinely tested.
